Energy Champion Volunteer
FEL Scotland
FEL is the Scottish environmental charity that’s changing our world for the better, project by project.
We believe that powerful change can be simple to make, and we design the collaborative social and environmental projects that deliver it – helping everyone take small steps to make their lives better and the world a healthier, happier, more sustainable place.
Now we’re looking for the best people to keep us striding in the right direction.
Overview
Within our FEL Energy team, we help individuals and communities take control of their energy use, save money, and reduce their carbon emissions. We are now looking for Energy Champions to help us deliver our work.
Working alongside our Energy Advisors, Energy Champions help bring energy advice to life. Energy Champions are community volunteers who use their own lived experience of reducing household energy use and bills to inspire others. Having taken practical steps – such as installing renewable technologies, improving insulation, or changing everyday energy behaviours – Energy Champions support local households and communities by sharing real‑world examples of what is possible.
Based within their own communities, Energy Champions are approachable voices who help demystify energy improvements and build confidence among households and communities who may feel unsure, sceptical, or overwhelmed by energy decisions. Their stories help people see that positive change is possible, practical, and achievable.
What You’ll Do
- Accompany Energy Advisors on community events, workshops, or open days to share your personal experience as a real‑life case study to build trust and motivation among people
- Talk honestly about the energy challenges you faced, the measures you adopted (such as renewables or energy‑efficiency improvements), and the outcomes you’ve seen, including cost savings, comfort improvements, or reduced energy use
- Help householders and community groups understand renewable and energy‑saving technologies in an accessible, jargon‑free way
- Act as a peer supporter, answering everyday questions from a lived-experience perspective rather than a technical one
- Work closely with the Energy Team, feeding back common concerns, misconceptions, or barriers that households raise
- Help normalise conversations about energy efficiency and renewables within your community, encouraging more people to implement climate-friendly steps
What You’ll Bring
You don’t need to be an expert at all. This role is ideal if you:
- Have taken steps to reduce your household energy use or bills (for example through insulation, heating upgrades, renewables or behaviour change)
- Are comfortable sharing your personal experience with others in a supportive and informal way
- Enjoy meeting people and contributing to positive change in your community
- Are interested in sustainability, climate action, or reducing fuel poverty
- Want to help others feel confident making energy improvements
Time Commitment
This is a flexible voluntary role that can be suited to best fit your schedule. Most volunteers contribute between 3–6 hours per month, depending on local events and availability. We're happy to work with you to shape this role around your interests and time.
Please find more information about the role on our website, and contact us if you have any questions or want to have an informal conversation before you apply.
